The easier it is to make sure your tyres are safe and legal, as well as having them replaced or repaired, the safer our roads will be.
The use of a mobile service makes fitting tyres on the drive at your home or at a place of work a quick and convenient solution for motorists who need new tyres or a puncture repair, but struggle to find the time to get to a garage or tyre depot.
A survey by Confused.com revealed that a total of 1.4 million motorists (three per cent) are driving on illegal tyres. They are putting their own lives at risk and also jeopardising the safety of their passengers and other road users.
It also discovered that more than six in 10 drivers (61 per cent) don’t know the legal minimum tread depth. Furthermore, over half of motorists (55 per cent) are unsure how to check their tyres.
Perhaps this is why four per cent of drivers have had an accident that was caused by defective tyres. Plus, motorists caught driving on bald tyres also face fines of up to £2,500 per tyre.
Amanda Stretton, motoring editor at Confused.com, said: ‘It’s worrying to find so many people are driving with bald tyres. Our research shows there is a serious lack of awareness among some motorists.
“Tyre tread ignorance could land offenders with fines of up to £2,500 per tyre, invalidate their insurance or lead to an accident.
“By conducting a few simple checks each month, drivers can keep themselves and other motorists safe. Driving has become expensive enough as it is, and avoiding unwanted fines should be incentive enough to comply with road safety regulations.”
How to check tyre tread depths
The easiest way to check your tyres are above the legal minimum tread depth limit of 1.6mm is to take the 20p test. Simply insert the coin into the main tread grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the 20p coin is obscured when inserted, then your tread is above the legal limit.
If the outer band of the coin is visible, this indicates your tyres may well be illegal and unsafe. This requires urgent attention and they may well need replacing as soon as possible.
It is important to check at least three locations around each tyre to gain an accurate result.
