Mindless vandals slashed the tyres on several cars just days after a local council rejected calls to have street lights turned back on at night.
The tyres-slashing spree took place after concerns had been raised that switching off the lights would lead to an increase in crime in the centre of Saffron Walden.
Now police are appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious on 14 and 15 March – or who can throw some light on the investigation – to come forward.
One of the cars attacked, an Audi TT, had both front tyres slashed, causing £150 worth of damage.
The current system, introduced by Essex County Council, has several streets across Saffron Walden plunged into darkness when the lights are turned off between midnight and 5am.
Police have appealed for anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area, or knows anything about these crimes, to contact the Saffron Walden station on 0300 333 4444 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
