What To Know About Your Van Tyres

Van tyres have a tough life, often bearing the weight of a heavy load on a regular basis. With lots of stop and start journeys in varying road conditions in cities, and beaten tracks, your van tyres need to be able to withstand the pressure and stresses of each drive. It is vitally important to monitor them and their needs in order to get the most out of your tyres.

By choosing the right van tyres, you can reduce fuel consumption, save money and reduce CO2 emissions being released into the environment, also improving safety handling.

Van Tyres Maintenance

In order to maximise the performance of your tyres, it is pivotal that they are looked after. Not only are you increasing costs but also compromising safety when you don’t ensure your tyres are in good condition on a regular basis. Below we are going to be covering a few tips and tricks on how to maintain your van tyres.

Tyre Tread

The legal tread limit in the UK for all tyres is 1.6mm, however, it is always recommended by professionals and experts that you should always change your tyres when they reach 3mm in the summer, and 4mm in the winter. This is especially important with van tyres, as, with the heavy loads they carry, you want to ensure that your tyres grip is of optimum performance at all times. Failure to comply with these rules could result in a fine of as much as £2500 and 3 points on your license per tyre.

As well as the legal aspect, tyres that do not comply with the legal tread requirements can also compromise the safety of yourself and others on the road, risking accidents that could be fatal. Tyres below the legal tread limit will have longer braking distances and less responsive handling which means they might not stop as quickly in an emergency situation.

Tyre Pressure

Having the correct tyre pressure when it comes to vehicles, but especially van tyres can help lower the costs of driving by a significant amount. It can also help decrease CO2 emissions and enhance driving safety and performance.

If you notice that your tyres are wearing unevenly, it may be due to having the incorrect tyre pressure. If this is the case, your van tyres could be using more energy and therefore more fuel is required to drive, increasing your costs on both early repair costs and fuel costs.

Be aware of the load

When it comes to vans, they are used to carrying heavy loads, however, it is important to consider how heavy the load is and how each will impact the tyres. This ties in with having the correct tyre pressure, as this will need to vary depending on the van’s load. Overloading your vehicle and not adjusting the pressure will result in quicker tyre wear, so make sure you are checking the correct pressure for your van tyres according to the loads you will be carrying.
