Can You Replace a Run Flat Tyre with a Regular Tyre?

Run flat tyres are tyres available as both premium and mid range tyres with an innovative technology that keeps you on the move in the event of a flat tyre. They provide security and safety if your car is to suffer from a flat.

However, as significant as run flats are, there are some great standard tyres with a handful of top of the range tyre technologies that keep road users safer than ever.

So, if you have run flat tyres you might think that they are expensive and be worried about the replacement cost so it’s common for people to wonder, can I replace my run flats with regular tyres?

The short answer is yes, you can replace your run flats with regular tyres, just make sure they meet your vehicle’s manufacturer recommendations and that it’s all four tyres you’re replacing, not just one or two.

However before going through the process of swapping a run flat with a regular tyre, it is important to know the difference between them.

Standard tyres are normally a lot cheaper than run flats and provide a smoother ride. Standard tyres also have the ability of being repairable in some instances, which run flat tyres cannot. Run flats are a temporary solution if a problem does come up.

With run flat tyres, the positives include the security of if you do get a flat tyre, you can safely get off the road and out of the way of busy traffic.

Also if one suddenly deflates you’ll have much more stability than if that happens with a regular tyre.

However with these positives comes negatives alongside them. A downside of run flats is their higher price, and if they do end up going flat it’ll be costly to replace. To use run flat tyres your car must also be equipped with a TPMS system which alerts the driver to any issues with the tyre such as improper inflation.

To conclude, the choice of what tyres you would prefer is up to you as there are plenty of pros and cons for either tyre. If you prefer the cheaper and most efficient option, regular tyres are the best choice for you. However if you are willing to spend more money with the expensive but safer option, run flats are your go to.
