A well-known tyres chain is getting some unwanted publicity after giving permission to a wheel-clamping company to patrol its car park.
The angry victims of the wheel clamper, who is targeting drivers outside National Tyres in Wincheter, are even threatening to picket the depot.
Furious Natalia Barbeito de Mariner warned she was prepared to picket National Tyres in Winchester again to stop people being clamped after Whites Car Park Solutions (WCPS) pounced on another motorist.
Glynn Thomas, regional manager of National Tyres, said the branch’s former manager has signed a 12-month contract with WCPS without authorisation.
Mr Thomas said he was happy for people to park there, and that free permits for users of the nearby takeaways had been issued.
The latest victim was a 71-year-old who was slapped with a £150 fine after visiting Wessex Tandoori.
He argued that he was only in the takeaway for four minutes, and was returning to his car to display a permit when he saw he had been clamped.
He said: “They call themselves Whites Car Park Solutions, but they are not solving anything — they’re just extorting money out of people.”
Jason White, managing director of WCPS, said: “We are employed by National Tyres to control unauthorised or illegally-parked vehicles 24 hours a day, or not displaying a valid parking permit.
“The client must ensure all authorised vehicles clearly display the necessary permit in the windscreen of the car.
“There are three signs warning it is a permitrestricted area, two are in bright red and can’t be missed.”
