Michelin introduced the radial tyre to the world and more recently developed the PAX run-flat system.
The company was founded in 1889 by the Michelin Brothers and remains in family ownership to this day.
It operates in over 170 countries and has manufacturing interests throughout the world. It was the first western tyre manufacturer to invest heavily in China and is in partnership with India's Apollo Tyres to develop the Radial tyre market on the domestic front.
For many years Michelin technology was arguably the best but other manufacturers such as Bridgestone have now overtaken them. Michelin still enjoys the benefit of owning one of the best known brand names in the world but this does not justify the tyre price differential that still exists.
There is an emphasis today on energy saving tyres and Michelin's Energy range is claimed to be more economical than traditional tyres.
The PAX Run-flat system competes directly with the Run-flat systems that have been developed by other manufacturers. However PAX is less versatile than the other systems and we doubt that it will ever win a significant market share.
Michelin is also involved in motorsport.
