Leading motoring expert Quentin Willson has been singing the praises of winter tyres as the UK gets to grips with more snow and ice.
In the ‘At your service’ section of his weekly column in the Sunday Mirror, Quentin was quizzed about winter tyres by David Taylor whose BMW 3-Series is stranded in his driveway. As soon as he goes near snow, it flops about like a haddock. He wanted to know whether winter tyres would help him get bak on the road?
Quentin replied: “Winter tyres will give you 50% more grip in slush, snow and ice and increase your stopping distance by as much as five car lengths.
“They stay soft below 7C, whereas normal tyres harden the older it gets. Trouble is, a change in German law means that deliveries are all going there, so we’ve got a shortage here.
“Good brands such as Continental WinterContact, Pirelli Sottozero, Dunlop Winter Sport 3D and Nokian WR G2. If your dealer hasn’t got winter ones, ask for all-season tyres, which are nearly as good. It’s a decision that could save your life.”
