With snow already fluttering down on the UK, more and more drivers are casting their minds back to the last few bitter winters and asking themselves whether it’s worth the hassle and money of switching to winter tyres.
This is what the excellent motoring correspondent Quentin Willson had to say on the subject when he was quizzed by one of the readers of his Sunday Mirror column.
Pat Hall, from Sunderland, asked this question: “With the cold weather coming, I’m getting worried about the grip of my tyres and I’ve heard it’s worth changing to winter rubber. Does it make that big a difference?”
Quentin offered this advice: “Normal tyres harden up in the cold, reducing their grip. Winter tyres have more natural rubber which stays flexible and gives better traction. The difference in braking difference can be as much as a car length, so it’s definitely worth changing before it gets deep and crisp and even.”
