A motoring survey has revealed that almost half of the motorists on UK roads are unable to change flat car tyres without help – and 75 per cent of those are women drivers.

According to the research by Gocompare.com a woeful 48 per cent, that is over 13.5 million of drivers, would be left stranded at the roadside if one of their car tyres burst or needed changing.

However, while the study found that only 46 per cent of 18 to 24-year-old drivers admitted they would be able to change a flat car tyres by themselves, 49 per cent of OAPs admitted they could do the job on their own.

Despite a lack of knowledge about their vehicles, including how to change car tyres, a third of younger drivers (68 per cent) do not bother taking out breakdown cover, while 92 per cent of the more car-savvy over 65’s admit to having protection.

Scott Kelly, head of car insurance at Gocompare.com, commented: “Young drivers are the least likely to have breakdown cover and those without it may just have to hope that a friendly OAP comes to their rescue the next time they’re struggling to change a flat tyre.”
