The Arctic blast sweeping the UK is taking its toll on vehicle batteries across the country, with motorists frustrated by vehicles that refuse to start on freezing mornings.

However, there are some steps you can take to help keep make sure your battery doesn’t let you down during the coming days and weeks, even in the most severe weather.

For a start it is worth remembering that batteries usually only have a lifespan of around five years, so if yours is already older than this, it is highly likely it is going to fail as temperatures plummet further this winter. And even relatively new batteries can let you down during the winter, because of the extra demands put on them by the constant use of the heater, windscreen heaters, seat warmers, lights, not to mention mobile phone, iPod and sat nav chargers.

There are also signs to look out for that indicate when your battery is getting weak and may need replacing before it gives up completely. A sluggish starter motor when the ignition key is turned or headlights that dim when the engine speeds drops to an idle, are both warning signals that your battery could be on its last legs.

To give your battery a helping hand and ease some of the pressure, it is a good idea to make sure that non-essentials like seat warmers and windscreen wipers are turned off before turning the ignition on. Equally important is to make sure everything is switched off before leaving your car, such as internal lights which will drain your battery.

If you suspect your battery is on the way out, don’t let it struggle on because eventually it will let you down and that could cause you a lot of hassle and expense because it means you will need to have it replaced as an emergency or cause you to miss an important appointment.
