By Denna Bowman
Firefighters spent hours tackling a blaze at a farm which started when 300 tyres caught light and sent acrid smoke billowing across the skies.
Witnesses said the flames from the tyres inferno could be seen from at least a mile away from the farm in Calke, near Ashby-de-la Zouch.
A team of about 20 firefighters tackled the blaze which spread to a barn at the Heath End Lane farm, according to the Leicester Mercury.
After the flames were extinguished, the farmer helped firefighters damp down by turning over the burning tyres using his tractor.
Firefighters were called out just after 6.40pm on Saturday and remained at the scene for most of the night.
Police and the Environment Agency also attended.
Eyewitness Stephen Marriott, 62, who could see the fire from more than a mile away, said: “It was a big fire with great big pillars of smoke blowing all the way towards Breedon.”
No one was hurt in the incident and the cause cause is still under investigation.
