A lot of motorists are holding back from fitting winter tyres because they think the UK winters are too mild to warrant the expense and the cost is too high anyway, according to Falken tyres:

However, etyres believe that they are an investment worth seriously considering, especially if you have to rely on your car at all times, because they deliver safety benefits, peace of mind and good overall value for money.

Falken tyres has identified the cost (25%) and the fact that our winters are too mild (20%) as the key reasons why many UK motorists shun winter tyres. Matt Smith, Falken’s UK director, commented: “The results surprised us, particularly the belief that the UK climate was sufficiently mild enough not to need cold weather tyres. Exacta weather is predicting a very cold winter and consumers seem to have forgotten the conditions that caused travel disruption from just three or four years ago.”

The fact is, winter tyres are designed to offer optimum performance in all conditions, especially once the temperature drops below 7C. This is because the tread design not only helps grip when driving on snow and ice, but also minimises the risk of aquaplaning by quickly dispersing surface water and also because they are designed to remain softer in cold temperatures, while regular tyres become harder affecting their performance.

As for cost, there are two ways to look at it. Either you can replace your regular tyres with winter options and store them in your garage during the colder months, then switch back again in the spring. etyres charge a nominal fee for switching the tyres around. This boosts your safety in the winter and preserves your regular tyres so you can continue to get wear out of them over the warmer months. Alternatively, you can simply keep your winter tyres on all year round, although they are likely to wear out faster if driven during hot weather.

What is important is that if you know that you are going to have to remain mobile, whatever the weather, for work or school runs, it is important that you explore the options carefully.
