While many UK motorists contemplate the pros and cons of fitting winter tyres, a Wiltshire-based company has developed a concept tyre that actually changes colour when winter tyres are needed.
Rubber research and development specialist Artis worked with Canadian Tire to develop the special all-season tyre concept that reminds drivers of the proper time to switch to winter rubber.
The new concept tyre has been was created to showcase a relatively simple but effective new technology: a colour-change effect when the temperature drops below 7C – the optimum time to fit winter tyres.
Using a thermochromic formulation within the white sidewall of the tyre, the tyre appears to have a normal, white sidewall at warmer temperatures, though it turns vivid blue when temperatures drop below the safe limit for all season rubber.
Canadian Tire is developing the tyre to provide a simple visual cue and reminder to promote safe driving on proper tyres for the season.
Dr. Joe Hallett from Artis explained: “Our team at Artis took a particular interest in this project as it presented an idea we believe no one had considered before.
“Canadian Tire is one of the leaders in delivering the message of winter driving safety and, as a father of young children, I share their desire to communicate how important it is to use winter tyres.”
