With the latest Bank Holiday weekend approaching now is a good time to make sure your tyres are in a safe and legal condition so you don’t have a May Day drama on the road if you are planning on travelling.

Whether you are heading off for an day trip or a mini break, your tyres must be checked to make sure they are up to the job. It only takes a few minutes if you follow these four simple steps and if you need new tyres or a puncture repair you still have time to get them sorted before the long weekend:

* Check the tyre tread – worn away tread is dangerous because your tyres won’t grip the road properly. Current UK tyre law requires at least 1.6mm of tread across the central three quarters of the tyre around its entire circumference. A quick way to check if your tyres are legal is to carry out the 20p test – simply insert a 20p coin into the main grooves of your tyres. If the outer band of the 20p coin is visible when inserted into the groove, then the tread is probably too low and will almost certainly need replacing

* Check tyre pressure – poorly inflated tyres put more strain on the engine and burn more fuel. Over-inflated tyres are also more likely to suffer a blow out. You can do this using a personal tyre pressure gauge or using the machine on most garage forecourts

* Inspect your tyres for any signs of damage – lumps, bumps, cuts and bulges, along with objects embedded in the rubber, can lead to slow punctures or blowouts at high speed, if they are not repaired or replaced.

* Finally, if your vehicle has a spare wheel, check that it is roadworthy – punctured or deflated tyres are easily replaced at the roadside if a spare wheel is present, and will take much longer to fix if there’s no replacement to hand. If the car does have a spare wheel, load the car so that it is easy to get to.
