As temperature levels drop across the UK, Auto Express has published the eagerly-anticipated results of its winter tyres test.
First place went to the Nokian WR D3 winter tyres, with the Continental ContiWinterContact TS 850 coming in second and the Goodyear UltraGrip 8 Performance winter tyres slid into third position.
The leading car magazine reports that from a safety point of view, fitting winter tyres is a ‘no-brainer’, because they have up to three times the grip of ‘normal’ summer tyres on snow, and work better in the wet when temperatures dip below around seven degrees.
Auto Express also highlighted the fact that winter tyres give motorists an edge in the most demanding conditions of the year.
To help motorists find out which is the best winter tyre for their vehicle Auto Express headed for the sub-zero temperatures of Nokian’s test centre in Ivalo, close to the Russian border in northern Finland. For the tarmac tests the team used Nokian’s proving ground in Tampere, Finland, using a Skoda Octavia.
Eight tyres in the highly popular 225/45R17 size – as found on big-selling hatchbacks and family saloons – were put through their paces. Auto Express also used its test-winning summer tyre in the same size as a comparison to see the advantage winter rubber has in slippery conditions.
Auto Express tested:
– Snow braking
– Snow traction
– Snow circle
– Snow handling
– Straight aquaplaning
– Curved aquaplaning
– Wet handling
– Wet braking
– Dry handling
– Dry braking
– Cabin noise
