Autumn really is a beautiful time of year, the trees are draped in the magnificent colours of the season and the countryside is ablaze with fiery red and burnt orange foliage . However, when these leaves fall onto wet roads they become a slippery menace for motorists!
This is why it is so important to make sure your tyres have plenty of grip. Although the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm, motoring and safety groups recommend you seriously consider replacing your tyres once they wear below 3mm, especially as we head into the winter months.
According to Continental tyres, independent research performed by the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) has reliable evidence that worn tyres significantly increase the chances of having an accident on wet roads by increasing the stopping distance.
So although the legal minimum UK tread depth is only 1.6mm, this research revealed that tyres with a 3mm tread had a 25 per cent better performance than those at the end of their legal life in wet conditions.
In terms of stopping distance this represents an extra 8 metres! In one test, where a new tyre with a tread depth of 8mm was compared to one with only 1.6mm the stopping distance increased by 13 metres.
