Sumitomo tyres are rapidly growing in popularity. With over 100 years of technical expertise and manufacturing experience, the Japanese company is one of the most influential tyre producers and business conglomerates in the world.
Sumitomo’s impressive brand portfolio includes the likes of Dunlop, Falken and Ohtsu.
The company’s roots go back to 1909, when the Sumitomo Group (founded in 1615) made an investment in Dunlop Japan. At the time, this was a brand new subsidiary of the British company, Dunlop Rubber. Over the years, the two companies built a close relationship. In 1963, the Sumitomo Group acquired control of Dunlop Japan and renamed it Sumitomo Rubber Industries.
Sumitomo launched mid-range brand Falken in Japan some twenty years later in 1983 and introduced it to the US market two years later.
In 1985, BTR plc took over Dunlop Rubber and Sumitomo acquired the company’s automobile tyre assets. The following year, Sumitomo also acquired Dunlop Tire Corporation of the US.
In 1997, Sumitomo entered into an exciting joint venture with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. The two companies agreed to manufacture tyres for each other’s markets, including Dunlop branded tyres. This venture ended in 2015, but means the two companies have influenced each for nearly two decades.
Sumitomo in Europe
Since the end of its joint venture with Goodyear in 2015, Sumitomo has recognised the huge impact it can have on the thriving European market and has expanded even further in this territory.
A secondary brand, Sumitomo Tyres, has been sold by Falken since late 2017. The current range consists of:
- The BC100 - a summer tyre for cars and SUVS
- The SL727 - a summer tyre for transporters and light commercial vehicles
- The WT200 - a winter tyre for cars and SUVs
Moreover, in 2017 Sumitomo bought the UK’s second biggest tyre supplier, Micheldever, for £215m. As a well-established tyre manufacturer seeking to broaden its knowledge of UK distribution, it was a clever move. It was also a logical decision because Micheldever is a leading UK distributor of Falken tyres, which are manufactured by Sumitomo.
