The Nokian Wetproof is the company's brand new summer tyre for passenger cars. Striking an important balance between safety, reliability and comfort, the Wetproof boasts excellent wet braking abilities and powerful aquaplaning resistance.
In order to achieve its balanced performance, the Wetproof features an innovative asymmetric tread pattern. This pattern improves traction and performance, as well as bolstering the tyre's durability and wear life. To accomplish this while still providing maximum comfort and safety, the tread area is divided into functional zones.
Dual Zone Safety technology ensures an excellent combination of wet and dry performance, which inspires confidence in all conditions. At the same time, this technology reduces rolling resistance to enhance fuel-efficiency. The Stability Zone, on the outside of the tyre, simplifies manoeuvring by offering stability and improving handling. The Wet Safety Zone is on the inside of the tyre; it improves its wet grip and resistance to aquaplaning.
Nokian's Coanda Technology further improves the Wetproof's resistance to aquaplaning. It speeds up the removal of water from the tyre's path. This technology is based on a phenomenon known as the Coandă effect. The idea is that water can follow the curve of a surface rather than flowing in a straight line. Nokian has incorporated this into the Wetproof's tread design. Also preventing the dangers of aquaplaning are the polished main grooves. These slick, wide grooves allow large volumes water to flow easily and efficiently away from the tyre.
The Wetproof's tread design also employs the company's Responsive Lock concept. The grooves of the longitudinal ribs are lined with interlocking counterparts. They set firmly against each other when the tyre presses against the road surface, which increases driving stability and further aids safety in the wet.
It's not only the Wetproof's tread design that improves its performance. Nokian's Aqua Hybrid compound also provides additional safety in rainy weather. It is a new-generation rubber compound that includes silica and advanced polymer types. It serves to provide excellent wet grip and improve fuel efficiency.
To provide additional safety, the Wetproof features Nokian's patented Driving Safety Indicator (DSI). Numbers on the centre area of the tread indicate the remaining tread depth in millimetres. This makes it clear when a tyre needs replacing.
Furthermore, the location and pressure indicators on the tyre’s sidewall aid safety and simplify tyre maintenance. This information area allows for the correct inflation pressure and installation location to be recorded when changing the tyres. Again, this is important for safety as it makes it simpler for drivers to check the condition of their tyres.
Nokian's expertise, gained over the last 120 years, means the Wetproof offers steady performance and safety in all conditions.
Research & Development
Nokian carried out a consumer survey to establish the characteristics deemed most important by motorists looking to buy new tyres. Perhaps unsurprisingly, safety characteristics emerged as being the most crucial. For the same reasons, the drivers surveyed also considered good wet and dry grip as particularly valuable.
As a result of those survey results, and of Nokian's core mission to improve the safety of their tyres, Nokian has created the Wetproof to offer an excellent combination of wet and dry properties. Nokian has carefully considered, and vastly improved, the WR SUV 4's wet grip and aquaplaning resistance in order to achieve this higher level of safety.
The development of the Wetproof has taken a number of years and has involved testing different prototypes across continental Europe. All of this was to ensure Nokian had produced the best tyre possible.
Nokian Wetproof Features
- Additional protection against aquaplaning and safety
- Improved ride comfort
- Reduced rolling resistance saves fuel and makes the tyre kinder to the environment
- Silent groove design and silent sidewall technology for improved ride comfort
Nokian Wetproof Reviews & Tests
The Wetproof is brand new tread pattern that won't be available to consumers until spring 2019. Therefore, there are currently no reviews or tyre test results for the Wetproof.
However, as early proof of its excellence, independent European testing organisation TÜV SÜD has granted the Wetproof its Tire Performance Mark. This certifies that the Nokian Wetproof is comparable with premium competitors in terms of quality and performance.
