The Nokian Powerproof is the company's latest ultra high performance summer tyre. Designed to safely, comfortably and silently adapt to variety of road surfaces, it demonstrates excellent handling characteristics and offers drivers peace of mind when it comes to high-speed lane changes and sudden braking.
The Powerproof is a completely new generation of summer tyre originally developed for central Europe, where summer conditions and road surfaces vary greatly. As a result of this, you can be sure it is a tyre able to adapt to a wide variety of driving conditions.
With the Powerproof, balance is key. It provides a winning combination of driving safety, performance and enjoyment through balanced road contact, stable handling and logical steering. To provide this high quality performance, the Powerproof has various interesting features and utilises a wide range of modern technologies.
Grip & Traction
The Powerproof's Dual Zone Safety concept ensures the tyre's contact surface is constant on both wet and dry roads. This enables the tyre to grip the road and adapt to different surfaces more effectively. It also improves the tyre's steering response.
As part of the Dual Zone Safety concept, the Power Zone on the tyre's outer shoulder helps improve handling precision. At the same time, firm tread blocks combine with a sloped groove design to help the Powerproof withstand high lateral forces and offer better dry traction.
Many strategically placed grooves serve to improve the Powerproof's wet grip. The tread features four wide, polished grooves running around the tyre's circumference, as well as trapezoidal flow grooves that divide the centre rib and the rib closest to the inner shoulder. They remove water more effectively from between the tyre and road surface, which consequently reduces the risk of aquaplaning.
Durability & Strength
The Powerproof has a new, stronger structure and a level of durability suited to an ultra high performance summer tyre. The design utilises three wide main ribs to increase sturdiness, while the sleek shoulder area offers additional stability.
The Dynamic Grip rubber compound involves functional molecule chains and polymers that form a dense, flexible, mesh-like structure. This ensures better grip and durability, even at high speeds. The multi-layered tread structure also reduces rolling resistance and therefore improves fuel efficiency and offers more even wear.
Customers demand high levels of safety and performance from their tyres, but they also refuse to compromise on comfort. That's why Nokian's research and development teams have worked hard to ensure the Powerproof provides excellent ride comfort.
In addition to including hemispherical indentations on the walls of the longitudinal ribs to reduce noise and increase comfort, the Powerfproof also utilises a Silent Groove Design. This is a famous Nokian innovation that reduces both interior noise and external rolling noise.
Moreover, the modern Clinch rubber compound helps to further minimise cabin noise. This is because it reduces the vibrations from the tyre body, preventing them from passing over onto the rim and inside the vehicle.
The Powerproof has a Driving Safety Indicator (DSI). Patented by Nokian, this unique tread wear indicator also features a droplet symbol that appears when the tread wears down to four millimetres. It indicates an increased risk of aquaplaning and alerts drivers clearly to when their tyres need changing.
Research & Development
The development of the Powerproof took four years. Nokian paid special attention to safety, in particular to ensuring controlled handling at high speeds. In fact, the company's Development Manager, Jarno Röytiö, explained how safety is at the forefront of all research and development the company carries out.
In addition to laboratory tests, Nokian used computer modelling and high-speed cameras in the development process of the Powerproof.
Nokian developed the Powerproof's durability through a tough test programme in extreme heat at the company's Spanish testing facilities. At the same time, high speed test tracks in Germany and Spain were used to refine the tyre's high speed characteristics.
Mikka Häkkinen, an F1 World Champion and Nokian Brand Ambassador, contributed his insight and expertise to the development and testing of the Powerproof. He explained how he believes excellent steering feedback is an extremely important characteristic of quality tyres. He continued, "When the tyre gives you confidence in driving, it also gives you safety."
