Michelin Alpin 5
The Michelin Alpin 5 is a premium touring winter tyre for passenger cars. Designed to provide all-round safety in any European winter conditions – dry, wet or snow – this tyre is the fifth addition to Michelin's popular Alpin range.
The Alpin 5’s innovative rubber compound contains sunflower oil and silica (Helio Compound 4G). This compound is responsible for the tyre’s resilience, as well as for optimising its performance in the cold. It keeps the tyre flexible, even at very low temperatures, which increases the tyre’s grip, including on wet and snowy surfaces. What’s more, this compound also helps the tyre maintain a good level of energy efficiency.
Furthermore, the Alpin 5 features a sharp, directional tread design. The wide-cut tread increases the void ratio by 17% compared its predecessor, the Alpin 4. This helps the tyre to bite into snowy ground more effectively.
In addition to this, the Alpin 5 has 16% more sipes than its predecessor. These sipes, when combined with an increased number of tread blocks, serve to optimise the tyre’s traction on ice and snow. Siped to full tread depth, the design also helps the Alpin 5 maintain performance levels throughout its lifespan. As well as all of this, thanks to the use of 3D sipes, the tread blocks are self-locking, which improves steering precision.
Finally, Michelin has also re-positioned the lateral grooves in the Alpin 5’s tread pattern. In their new orientation, these grooves disperse water from the path of the tyre more quickly and efficiently, which helps to reduce the risk of aquaplaning.

Michelin Alpin 5 Tests
The Michelin Alpin 5 has performed consistently well in a number of independent tyre tests.
In Auto Bild's 2017 Winter Tyre Test, the Alpin 5 ranked second out of twenty-one tyres and received the label “Exemplary”. It outperformed a number of other premium brands. It was beaten only by the Continental WinterContact TS 860. Testers felt the Alpin 5 offered very good wet grip and low wear, as well as providing balanced handling in the dry and in the snow. They also found it was impressively resistant to aquaplaning. The only negative noted by testers was some rolling resistance.
In the SUV version of the same test, Auto Bild labelled the Alpin 5 as “Recommended”. It ranked third out of eleven, notably outperforming Pirelli, Bridgestone, Hankook, Vredestein and Kuhmo. It ranked below the Continental WinterContact TS 850 P and the Test Winner, the Goodyear UltraGrip Performance Gen 1. The only negatives noted by testers were the relatively high cost of the tyre and its average braking performance on dry surfaces.
In the same magazine's 2016 Winter Tyre Test, the Alpin 5 ranked second out of twenty. Testers found it to be quite an expensive tyre, but it performed the best on snow. It also demonstrated stable wet and dry handling and short wet braking distances.
Finally, in German motoring club ADAC’s 2015 Winter Tyre Test, the Alpin 5 won the "Best Performance" title in the categories of Snow, Wet and Ice Braking.
