Dunlop Winter Sport 5
Launched in 2015, the Dunlop Winter Sport 5 features a wide range of innovative technologies to ensure top performance.
Wet & Snow Performance
The Winter Sport 5 features a directional design that includes deep tread grooves. The design forces surface water into these grooves so it can be efficiently channeled away from the tyre's contact patch. This consequently reduces the risk of aquaplaning and helps drivers keep control on wet roads.
Furthermore, Bridgestone has included angled centre sipes to the Winter Sport 5's tread design. As a result their angle, length and ability to grab onto surfaces means they improve traction and lateral stability in slippery conditions.
These centre sipes combine with the tyre's v-shaped grooves. Consequently this creates an intricate network that helps the tread collect and remove snow from the contact patch. As a result, this improves the tyre's snow traction and handling.
Moreover, the tyre's high number of tread blocks means there are extra edges in contact with the road surface. This further enhances the tyre's performance on snowy roads.
A final impressive feature of the Winter Sport 5's design is its Multi Blade System. This involves different types of blades for different winter road conditions and allows the tyre to perform consistently well.
Working together with the Winter Sport 5's cutting edge tread design is its high-percentage silica compound. Inspired by that of Motorsport tyres, this compound is responsible for the tyre's exceptional grip in wet and cold conditions. Additionally it offers excellent braking and acceleration performance. What's more, this compound ensures the tyre experiences minimal wear and tear.
General Performance & Handling
As would be expected of a premium tyre, the Winter Sport 5 offers excellent general performance and handling characteristics. This is in addition to its outstanding behaviour in wet and snowy conditions.
First of all, its Specific Bead Seat System strengthens links between the rim and the tyre. This consequently enhances control and improves driving precision.
Furthermore, a jointless belt - which also requires the use of a hybrid overlay technology - prevents the tyre from deforming at speed. This means excellent high speed stability and less irregular tread wear.
All of Dunlop's newer tyres also have a flatter tread profile. Depending on the tyre's type and size, the surface area of the contact patch has increased by approximately 4%-8%. The benefits include increasing cornering stability and steering precision. Additionally improving dry grip, and making wear more even.
Perhaps one of the most impressive aspects of the Winter Sport 5 is its Multi Radius Tread (MRT). The design uses ten different radii for precision. It efficiently distributes pressure in the contact patch, and as a result, makes transitions from straight stretches to corners smoother. This also has the impact of improving wet and dry braking and cornering control.
Partly thanks to the effectively optimised weight distribution through the tyre, the Winter Sport 5 provides low rolling resistance and excellent fuel efficiency.
As well as features to improve performance, the Winter Sport 5 includes extra technology for comfort. First of all, it features inbuilt rim protectors to prevent kerb damage to your wheel. Secondly, it employs Dunlop's Noise Shield Technology. This reduces tyre noise inside the vehicle by up to 50% and makes for a far more comfortable ride.
