The popular Continental WinterContact TS 860 has won the coveted winter tyre test award from Auto Express for the second year running.
It beat off competition from seven other winter tyres to scoop the title from the UK’s No 1 weekly selling car magazine.
Auto Express commented on the winning tyre: “Continental has again shown itself to deliver high quality performance tyres for all weather conditions. The TS 860 boasts good fuel efficiency and great handling on wet, dry and snow-covered roads. With unpredictable winter weather in the UK year-on-year, this tyre will keep you safe whilst driving under any conditions you may face.”
All the tyres were tested on their performance, quality, safety and desirability to offer motorists considering fitting winter rubber to their vehicle a comprehensive overview of the products available on the market.
Scott Benbow, Product Marketing Manager at Continental, said: “Following on from the ContiWinterContact TS 850, the most successful Continental winter tyre to date, the TS 860 has again shown Continental’s commitment to driver safety. This latest win for the WinterContact TS860 is an excellent endorsement for Continental’s continued ambition to improve driver safety as part of our VisionZero initiative.”
While its predecessor was also an award-winning tyre, the combination of a new tread compound and design are credited with boosting the performance of the latest version of the WinterContact TS 860. Braking distances are four percent shorter on ice, with further improvements in snow handling, grip on snow and ride quality. This has been achieved without sacrificing mileage and rolling resistance, which remain on a par with the TS 850.
The Cool Chili compound has a high proportion of silica that reduces braking distances on wet roads due to its special damping characteristics. Also new are special high-performance resins that maintain the flexibility of the compound even at low winter temperatures, leading to shorter braking distances on many winter surfaces.
The Liquid Layer Drainage is another stand-out feature of the TS 860. The introduction of an extra drainage channel moulded into the tread block enables water to drain away faster than was previously possible, cutting braking distances on icy roads. While the introduction of SnowCurve technology helps the tyre deliver enhanced grip and improved braking on snow-covered roads.
The runner-up in the 2017 winter tyre test was the Hankook i*cept RS2 with Auto Express commenting: “It was a sound performance that inspired confidence. No surprise then that it won all the other tests for traction, braking and around the circle”.
Third place went to the Dunlop Winter Sport 5 wtih a verdict of: “Return to form with a balanced performance”.
