These days we read a lot about “low rolling resistance tyres”, it’s a phrase synonymous with environmentally-friendly motoring.
Tyres manufacturers are investing in producing them and car manufacturers are fitting them as standard.
So what are they all about?
Put simply low rolling resistance tyres mean that due to the components of the tyre, primarily its compound, it rolls more easily than standard tyre.
Following on from this, a tyre that rolls more easily needs less energy to keep moving.
Given the fact that researchers estimate that approximately 5–15% of the fuel consumed by a typical car may be used to overcome rolling resistance, any reduction is a good thing.
Less energy means less fuel consumption, and less fuel consumption means less CO2 emissions, therefore reducing the impact on our environment.
By choosing a low-rolling resistance tyre you will be contributing towards a greener, healthier environment – and a slightly healthier bank balance.
