Sebastian Vettel takes pole position in the Turkish Grand Prix today after he pipped Jenson Button at the post in a thrilling qualifying climax.
The Red Bull and the Brawn drivers’ both chose the soft tyres option to tackle the undulating Istanbul Park circuit.
However, Button’s teammate Rubens Barrichello gambled on a set of hard tyres, but to do three laps on them, the third of which was fastest.
It came up short of the two leaders, but landed him third place on the grid at just a quarter of a second slower than Button.
After watching the qualifying sessions, ITV.com/F1 columnist James Allen reported: “I was interested to see that in the first session most drivers went with the hard tyre and ran it for two or three laps.
“In the second session there was a change of mentality and most moved onto the softs, some getting the fastest lap out of the second lap on them.
“It was a day for judgement and calculation as everyone was feeling their way on the tyres.
“Tomorrow in the race I expect most people to start on the hard tyre and run the soft only for the final stint.”
