Michelin tyres have pulled out of the upcoming 2009 Shanghai Auto Show later this month.
The French tyres manufacturer has attended the shows in Beijing and Shanghai for the past 10 years, but the economic downturn has forced it to withdraw its support, according to sina.co.
The news will be a big blow to the industry and the event organisers, because the world’s largest tyre maker has played an active and important role in China’s auto market where its name is synonymous with quality and prestige.
A new Chinese-made car will instantly assume the air of high quality and strong performance if it is equipped with Michelin tyres.
A spokesman for Michelin China confirmed that the company will not go to the Shanghai auto show or other auto shows this year.
He said: ‘The whole industry is in difficulty and we also have to do some adjustment and scale-down.’
