A massive tyres inferno which filled the skies with acrid smoke for more than three days has been blasted as “an accident waiting to happen” by angry locals.
Fire crews have been battling since Friday to extinguish the tyres blaze which closed off Warsop town centre in Nottinghamshire over the weekend.
Now angry locals are demanding answers from council chiefs after they had raised concerns about the 400,000 tyres which were stockpiled at Robin Hood Environmental site.
The fire caused evacuations and chaos at the weekend, when access to the town centre was closed and residents were told to keep their doors and windows closed.
One resident told reporters: “We said there was a disaster in the making here because they were stockpiling so many tyres.”
The fire was still burning on Monday – almost three days after the dramatic inferno which closed off the town over the weekend.
Fire chiefs are still unable to establish how the blaze broke out.
