Buying a new tyre can be daunting, because there are so many things to consider, including driving style and budget. That is why tyre tests are important, not just for manufacturers, but motorists as well.
Two leading car magazines, Auto Express and evo, recently published the results of their summer tyre tests and if you are the sort of person who likes to really get to grips with the facts before making a purchase, you will find they are worth reading.
This is because you might know the tyre size you need, but how do you find out about driving comfort or realistic fuel economy of the tyre you are considering buying?
Independent tyre reviews are a great way to get accurate, honest information and detailed comparisons. Performance, comfort, fuel economy, price, even cabin noise all come under scrutiny.
Auto Express awarded the ContiPremiumContact 5 its top tyre accolade in its test of 11 size 205/55 R16 summer tyres, ranging from the premium to the budget ends of the market. The tyre was recognised “across a broad spectrum, taking top spot for dry handling, wet handling and wet braking”.
The publication summarised: “To win our test, a tyre needs to be a strong all-rounder. As our results show, the Continental is just that. It had an agility and directness others could only dream of. For a comfort tyre, it was pretty sporty next to rivals.”
Second and third place were taken by the Dunlop Sport BluResponse and Bridgestone Turanza T001 EVO respectively.
Similarly, evo tested nine tyre brands in the popular 225/40 R18 size, to help its readers find the rubber that best suits their budgets and requirements, with overall victory going to the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 which was described as “peerless in the wet” and “simply a great tyre”.
A good set of tyres can help you stay safer on the roads, save money and enjoy a better ride, which is why it is worth investing a bit of time researching your options and checking out tyre test reviews before investing your money.
