The slick tyres which promise to deliver more excitement on the 2009 circuit will not be much use to Lewis Hamilton if his team can’t iron out their cars problems.
The tyres are part of the new technical overhaul aimed at boosting overtaking and the overall spectacle for the season which gets underway in Melbourne in less than two weeks.
But the McLaren squad have admitted that its MP4-24 is currently not fast enough compared to its rivals and unlikely to be in a position to give the reigning world champion and partner Heikki Kovalainen a chance to compete for victory on Sunday 29th March.
The Woking-based team are taking part in the final pre-season test in Jerez this week where they are hoping to regain some momentum after slumping to the bottom of the timesheets at the final major test of the winter in Barcelona.
This came despite the MP4-24 running with a new front wing, redesigned floor and top body – a package of Melbourne-spec performance updates new tewm boss Martin Whitmarsh acknowledges has resulted in a ‘performance shortfall’ which it is ‘working hard to resolve’.
