More than 40 people die on UK roads every year because of defective or improperly inflated tyres, many others are injured, according to statistics from the RAC.
The motoring organisation stresses that it is vitally important for vehicle owners to check their tyres regularly, as tyres are the only point of contact a car has with the road.
The RAC also points out that maintaining correct tyre pressure also has benefits other than safety.
Correct tyre pressure has been proven to benefit the environment by maintaining optimum fuel efficiency, therefore reducing CO2 emissions. This is because under inflated tyres increase the rolling resistance so that it requires more fuel to maintain the same speed.
In addition properly inflated tyres extend the life of the tyre meaning they need to be replaced less often. Under or over inflated tyres suffer more damage and wear than those with the correct pressure and need to be replaced more regularly.
