A post-winter pothole epidemic is inflicting record damage on Britain’s car and tyres, according to AA Car Insurance.
Claims statistics reveal that pothole-related claims have trebled in the past year, with alloy wheels and low-profile tyres proving to be particularly prone to damage.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said it takes a particularly nasty pothole to cause insurance-claimable damage to a car.
He said: “Every winter brings a small wave of claims for pothole damage but this February alone has seen the number of claims treble.”
AA Car Insurance estimates that around 2000 drivers nationwide claimed for pothole damage to their cars in February 2009 – up from around 700 last February. Thousands more are believed to have suffered more minor damage for which it is not worth claiming.
