Pirelli are confident that the tyres they have taken to Valencia for testing are the ‘definitive’ Formula One version, according to the head of their tyre programme.
Paul Hembery, motorsport director for the Italian tyres manufacturer, was asked how definitive the tyres were ahead of the 2011 season.
He replied: “I hope pretty definitive. We’ve always said we’re open to learning and if we have to make adjustments during the season we will, but we hope we are now with the product we are going to start the season with.”
Pirelli are set to test around 20 sets of tyres per team during the course of the three day testing session which got underway yesterday.
At lunchtime on Tuesday – the second day of the test at Circuit Ricardo Tormo near Valencia in Spain – Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso was the fastest with reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel trailing in second place for Red Bull.
