Pirelli motorsport tyres director Paul Hembery admits he is almost as much in the dark as anyone about how the super-soft and soft compounds will wear during the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend.
Hembery told Autosport.com: “Tyres are a strange thing.
“The reason we are going supersoft and soft is that you want to have grip from the tyre. Go with something too hard then you end wheel-spinning, tyres grain and they get consumed even quicker. I know it is a strange conundrum and a lot of people are thinking Montreal will be very aggressive, but probably not.
“We’ve never run there. I have a pretty good idea, I’ve been to Montreal. I’ve seen the track, I’ve walked it, but I’m not going to make a prediction. We want to see what happens in [today’s] first practice. It is impossible to predict.”
Tyre wear is a critical factor at the Montreal circuit, traditionally making Canada one of the most entertaining races of the year.
