New tyre legislation will help to stop ‘unscrupulous’ dealers misleading motorists into buying tyres they make the most profit on, according to the managing director of etyres.
Tony Bowman has welcomed the new EU legislation which comes into effect on 1st November and will enable drivers to select their new tyres based on safety, fuel economy and noise.
“Until now tyre retailers have sold what they make most profit on by claiming that that particular tyres has the best grip, when they have absolutely nothing to support that claim,” according to Bowman.
“The new labelling system will take away the ability of unscrupulous tyre retailers to hoodwink drivers into buying what they make the most profit on.”
Bowman also backed the launch of a new app by LANXESS, the world’s largest producer of high performance synthetic rubbers, which will allow motorist to calculate the time and miles required to recoup the additional cost of buying more environmentally-friendly tyres.
He said: “There are 42 million tyres sold in the UK every year, but until now the majority of our customers have relied onus for advice about the best ones to suit their needs, including their driving style and budget.
“The simple to understand colour-coded stickers mean motorists don’t have to be a tyre expert to see which tyres give better grip in the wet, offer the most fuel efficiency and make the least noise.
“For motorists the key factor is going to be having a better understanding of the wet grip performance of their tyres.
“And the new LANXESS app offers customers a greater depth of knowledge which will allow them to make a more informed choice base on the individual savings they can expect to make with different tyres, plus the advantages of using more environmentally-friendly products.
“The app also puts all this key information literally at their finger-tips.”
