Hankook tyres is celebrating its first Porsche original equipment fitment with the supply of two size combinations to the Macan. The announcement heralds the start of exciting ventures with other super cars in the next five years.
The new deal is to supply the German car manufacturer with 18 and 19-inch versions of the Ventus S1 evo² SUV; the Hankook tyres will be supplied in either sizes 235/60 R 18 for the front wheels and 255/55 R 18 for the rear or 235/55 R 19 front and 255/50 R 19 rear.
Ho-Youl Pae, Hankook Tire Europe’s president and chief operating officer, said: “Our flagship tyre is also outfitted with innovative technologies and sophisticated designer features for high performance SUVs and we are excited that Porsche, another German premium automobile manufacturer, shows their confidence in our products as original equipment.
“Like its little brother from the car segment, the Ventus S1 evo² SUV provides a sporty and direct driving experience combined with safety and comfort, making it another exceptional example of Hankook Kontrol Technology, our philosophy of combining technology, top performance and safety in all of our products.”
Woo Byung-il, senior vice president of Hankook Tire’s Global Original Equipment Division, added: “It is never easy to supply for Porsche, since the German carmaker requires top-level quality. Porsche has gone through seven inspections at our Hungarian production facility as well as lane change tests at speeds of over 220 kilometers per hour.
“We are proud that our tyres are the only auto part in the vehicles that bear the supplier’s name. Although we started with the Porsche Marcan, we will expand lineups to other models.”
The Ventus S1 evo2 SUV is the outcome of three and a half years of research to meet the special needs of Macan, according to the Korean tyre company. Applying Dual Layer Tread technology, the tyre minimises the effect of wear on wet tyre performance by exposing high-grip rubber as the tyre wears, enabling optimised grip and sporty handling under extreme weather conditions.
Based on its technology for high-performance tyres ― sealant, run-flat and silent tyres ― the company said it will supply tyres to other supercars by 2020. It aims to supply its tyres for the Porsche 911 and two further Porsche models are in discussion to use Hankook tyres.
Currently Hankook provides mostly run-flat tyres to BMW and Mercedes and sealant tyres to Volkswagen.
The company said that starting with the Macan, it plans to supply Hankook Tires to such high-end carmakers as Bentley and Maserati in 2016, before Lamborghini and Ferrari in 2017.
