Former Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton was fastest in today’s practice session for Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix – but the tyres are injecting extra excitement into the weekend’s racing.
The McLaren driver was .29 seconds faster than championship leader Red Bull racer Mark Webber.
But its the tyres that are getting everyone excited.
It appears that the preferred strategy may be for teams to qualify on the harder Bridgestone tyre for what looks certain to be a two-stop race. The softer tyre will then be saved for the latter part of the race when more rubber has been laid on the track.
However, it could be that some of those who are quick, but not necessarily quick enough for the first couple of rows, may elect to qualify on the option tyre and gamble on an early Safety Car to change onto the harder tyre.
The grid order could therefore be more of a lottery dependent upon tyre strategy key.
