Remember when British Rail blamed leaves on the tracks for long delays on the trains – well for motorists leaves on the roads can actually present a real hazard.
Wet roads and slippery leaves make cars prone to sliding, so it’s a good time to make sure your tyres are in tip-top condition.
If your tyres don’t have enough grip because they are bald or are not properly inflated so they are less effective, it can lead to accidents and crashes all over the roads.
Sussex police are already warning road users in their county to be aware that the road conditions are changing after an increase of accidents on their roads.
Sgt Richard Hornsey said: “At this time of year, motorists should expect the roads to offer less grip due to water and/or fallen leaves.
“It is vital that drivers travel at speeds that are appropriate for the conditions and leave more distance between themselves and the vehicle in front to enable them to stop safely within the distance that they can see to be clear.”
