Rumour has it on the Formula One circuit that some teams may be considering avoiding getting into the top 10 qualifying session for Sunday’s Turkish Grand Prix to save their tyres for the race.
The new Pirelli tyres are designed to degrade rapidly, which is really adding to the excitment and the spectacle of the sport.
McLaren’s engineer Phil Prew reckons there could even be at least three pit stops per car during the fourth race of the season.
And according to Tony Jardine, in his skysports.com column, the thinking coming from holding back from the front of the pack “comes after Mark Webber blasted from 18th on the grid in China to third by the race finish after problems in qualifying and that left him with three unused sets of fresh tyres for the race.”
Whatever happens, the tyre strategy will vary dramatically from team to team and it will play a vital part in determining the outcome of the race.
