With the summer holidays just round the corner now is the time to make sure you haven’t got any unsightly bulges, sort out your bald patches and check for signs of excess wear and tear…
We are of course referring to your tyres!
And once you’ve done all that, don’t forget to get (your 20p) into the groove of the tread depths to check your tyres are safe and legal.
The legal minimum tread depth for cars in the UK is 1.6mm throughout a continuous band. To check yours, insert a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the coin is obscured when inserted, then your tread is above the legal limit. However, if the outer band is visible, then your tyre may be illegal and unsafe and almost certainly need replacing as soon as possible.
When taking the test, remember to check at least three locations around each tyre to get an accurate result. Even if there is only one small bald patch, the tyre still has to be replaced. As the test is so quick and easy, stay safe by checking your tyres at least once a month.
Puncture repairs save you money
While carrying out your tyre checks, if you spot a problem, such as a cut or object embedded in the rubber, you don’t necessarily have to fork out for a brand new tyre. It is possible etyres can carry out a mobile puncture repair, the trick is to call us as soon as possible and avoid driving on it, this increases the chances of a repair being feasible.
In the event you discover a bulge (also referred to as a bubble or egg) on the sidewall of the tyre it is important to stress the vehicle it is fitted to is not safe to drive. The area flexes while driving, therefore a patch will not stay in place. A bulge or bubble also indicates there is structural damage to the tyre that cannot be repaired.
