If you want to save money and stay safe on the roads during 2011 you could get off to a flying start by checking your tyres and making it a New Year’s resolution to give them a regular once over.
Making sure tyres are properly inflated, have the minimum legal requirement of 1.6mm tread depth and do not have visible signs of damage, such as cracks or bulges, will make driving cheaper and also reduce the chance of being involved in an accident.
Motorists should check tyre pressure once a week, because a properly inflated tyre will last longer, grip better and make the car more economical.
Tread depth is also important. There should be at least 1.6mm of tread across the middle 75% of the tyre. Go below this minimum standard and it will reduce the grip and stopping distances in wet weather. Motorists caught with tread depth below the legal minimum requirement of 1.6mm could face a fine of up to £2500 per tyre, plus points on their license.
