Dozens of Kwik Fit managers were suspended earlier this week over claims that they they were cooking the books to get extra bonuses.
It is believed most of the 30 tyres depots affected are in Scotland.
A worker at the tyres firm – famed for slogans “You Can’t Fit Quicker Than A Kwik-Fit Fitter” and “We’re The Boys To Trust” – told the Sun newspaper: “It’s a rip-off.
“People have been getting bonuses on the back of work which wasn’t done. Nothing has been proved but it looks like a good few folk are getting their jotters over this.”
The insider said personnel staff swooped on branches in lightning raids, adding: “It was completely out of the blue. They took the boss into his office. Then he was sent home and we were told he was suspended.
“First it was the depot managers, then the operations managers. Every depot was visited in about an hour.”
Last night a spokesman for Kwik-Fit confirmed the probe was under way but said police had not yet been informed.
The probe could extend to all of the firm’s 607 UK outlets.
Last June the Sun also revealed Kwik-Fit demoted one worker and another resigned over claims disabled drivers were charged for car servicing that should have been free.
