Community nurses working in remote and rural parts of the Scottish Highlands are calling for snow tyres to be fitted to their vehicles as standard in the winter.
Despite the recent harsh weather which brought parts of the country to a standstill, snow tyres were only fitted to vehicles used by the nurses if they paid for them out of their own pocket.
Now they have appealed to Labour MSP Rhoda Grant to help get the leasing agreement revised so that winter tyres would be provided as part of the package.
Ms Grant said: “It seems to be ludicrous that community nurses are prevented from having their cars fitted with tyres that are more appropriate to the winter conditions in the areas they cover.
“These journeys would be safer if their cars were better equipped to deal with winter conditions.”
NHS Highland said it would investigate whether the agreements, which are set at national level, could be changed.
