China’s largest tyres manufacturer is investing heavily in the development of a world-class European Technical Centre (ETC) based in the UK in a bid to become a bigger player in the western market.
GITI tyres is aiming to strengthen its position in the lucrative European replacement market and manoeuvre into a position to gain original equipment (OE) contracts.
The move is coupled with the company’s significant investment in the expansion of its main R&D centre in China.
The ETC is based at the renowned MIRA (Motor Industry Research Association) facility in Nuneaton on the outskirts of Birmingham.
GITA employees are keen to emphasise that they are already making good use of the state of the art testing facilities and highly experienced test engineers at MIRA, according to a leading trade magazine.
Tyres and Accessories reported that the team’s first objective was to undertake an extensive benchmark programme in order to gain a full understanding of the main competitor’s current performance levels, strengths and weaknesses.
Armed with this knowledge GITI’s clear objective is to design and engineer products to reach and even surpass these premium competitor’s performance levels.
Tyres and Accessories commented: “And when you consider that the global R&D is both international in its representation and compromised of technicians who have previously worked at the highest levels of leading tyre brands, you can understand why the bar has been set so high.”
