With more unsettled weather on the way, now is the time to give your car tyres the once over to avoid accidents or breakdowns further down the road.
Tyres lose pressure in cold weather, so check them regularly (see vehicle handbook for the proper level recommended by the manufacturer). They can lose an average of one pound pressure for each five degree Celsius drop in temperature and an improperly inflated tyre is much more likely to have a blowout.
Also check the tyre tread, the minimum tread depth is 1.6mm, although motoring experts, including the AA, recommend tyres be replaced when the tread depth reaches 2mm.
Bald or worn tyres can lead to skidding and aquaplaning and must be replaced immediately to prevent the car losing grip on the road.
Vehicle owners should also check for any signs of damage to the tyre walls or wheel rims which can be caused by wear and tear.
