Motorists planning to drive down to the Alps for your skiing holiday should check their car tyres and follow other handy tips from P and O Ferries’ driving expert Simon Heptinstall.
He even recommends drivers take snow chains for their tyres and practice fitting them in the relative comfort of their driveway at home.
Snow chains are not just a great help gripping on compacted snow and ice, but they in certain areas of France motorists are legally required to carry them. There are frequent police checks when it snows and those caught without chains are turned back.
Simon’s other tips for driving in potentially severe winter conditions include:
• Giving your car a good once over. As well as obvious checks, like oil, tyres and water, top the windscreen washer with de-icing fluid ready for the mountains.
• Make sure that your normal insurance and breakdown services cover you in Europe
• Check the legal requirements for the countries you will be driving through – they’re all a little bit different. It’s not just the speed and drink-drive limits; driving through France without a warning triangle and reflective jacket in your boot risks an on-the-spot fine if you’re stopped by police.
