We like to keep you posted on unusual uses for old tyres, and we’ve just come across a swimming idea they’re about to float passed Scarborough Council for approval.
It’s for an artificial reef made from more than one million old tyres!
The quirky idea, which could protect the coastline from the effects of coastal erosion and also provide a fantastic location for rearing lobster, is the brainchild of Lincolnshire-based Reef UK.
Managing director Eddie Todd has already had talks with marine scientists at the Scarborough Campus of the University of Hull and is hoping the project could start later in the year.
John Riby, Scarborough Council’s head of technical services, said that the authority had not, as yet, been officially approached about such a proposal.
