A rise in whiplash compensation claims has prompted an independent resource website to call for a change in UK motoring law making winter tyres a legal requirement for all vehicles.
An independent resource website for people looking to pursue compensation claims, is petitioning for the new tyres legislation, which will bring the UK in line with other European countries.
The petition comes after the site saw an increase in the number of whiplash claims over the latest bout of bad weather, demonstrating the dangers that heavy snowfall and icy temperatures bring.
Tom Johnson, said: “The number of leads received during the winter period has been overwhelming and has made the dangers of winter driving very evident.
“Winter tyres are a legal requirement in most EU countries but not in the UK, and the switch could help prevent thousands of accidents on our roads every year.
“Winter tyres can be used on snow, slush, ice, frost and even wet roads and as soon as the temperature dips below 7°C their effectiveness comes into play, meaning UK motorists could get good use out of their winter tyres for a good 50% of the year.
“Many manufacturers actually recommend winter tyres are used all year round in Britain as the performance in damp, mild and even warm environments remains superior. Only in extremely hot temperatures would summer tyres be preferable.”
