Probably the most bizarre use for recycled old car tyres has been discovered by hard-up motorcyclists in Nigeria.
After their Government recently made the wearing of helmets compulsory, the bikers have taken to strapping chunks of old tyres to their heads with string in place of the real thing.
Other make-shift headgear includes dried fruit shells, saucepans and paint pots.
The new law, which was introduced at the start of the year, has caused chaos around the African nation, with many motorcyclists complaining the helmets are too expensive or not widely available.
Newspaper reports even quote some people saying they fear they may catch a skin disease from a real helmet and in extreme cases, they could be laced with black magic spells.
Last month we reported on the news of a Canadian who is building an eco-friendly house out of old tyres.
