For anyone who is not convinced fitting winter tyres to their vehicle is a cost-effective expense for them, there is a compromise – all season tyres.
AutoBild, the leading German auto magazine, put 10 of the latest all season tyres through an extensive array of tests in summer and winter conditions.
The idea is that the tyre will be able to cope with more of less everything the British weather has to throw at it, namely temperatures ranging from below freezing to 30 degree summer days.
The Vredestein Quatrac 3 was the outright winner with the final mark “exemplary” and proved to be an extremely flexible and well balanced tyre.
In addition to fine results on dry road surfaces, the tyre also had outstanding scores on wet and snowy surfaces.
AutoBild reported: “The Quatrac 3 is a balanced and versatile tyre with accurate steering and superb handling – it ensures safety and security for drivers in case of aquaplaning, and has a short braking distance on both wet and snowy surfaces.”
Closely following the Vredestein was the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons. Again, its real strength was managing to score well in every category, with testers commenting it was a tyre with “no drawbacks”.
The Hankook Optimo 4S rounded out the top 3, only let down by the comparatively harsh ride it provided when directly compared to the leading two tyres.
