A quick word of warning to all 4×4 owners who are dabbling in a bit of modifying – whether it’s your engine or your tyres, the first thing to do is check that it’s OK with your insurer.
Modifying 4x4s has seen a big increase in recent years, especially as green-laning becomes more popular.
But tyres, wheels, raised suspension, under-body protection and snorkels – the most popular mods – must be signed off by your insurance company, otherwise you might find you are not covered when you need to make a claim, according to Adrian Flux Insurance Services.
Flux splits off-roader modifications into three broad groups:
One is the luxury end of the market, which mainly covers cosmetic mods – leather interiors, DVD screens, fancy wheels and so on
Next are LPG conversions, they are increasingly popular and Flux has them in a category on their own.
The third category involves off-roading and green-laning modifications. This is the area that has seen the biggest growth in recent years. The most popular mods on Flux’s books include wheels and tyres, raised suspension, under-body protection and snorkels, which have really taken off.
