Tyres and high fashion don’t often make natural bed-fellows (except in the Pirelli calendar of course), but earlier this week they inspired the winner of one of the industry’s most coveted awards.
Italian print designer Flaminia Saccucci took inspiration from tyres to claim the L’Oréal Professionel Young Talent Award for the best student collection of the year at the renowned Central Saint Martins college.
Saccucci powered to into first-place with a collection of rubber dresses and trousers hand-painted with flowers and tyre-tread marks at the CSM catwalk showing at York Hall in London’s Bethnal Green on Tuesday night.
The delighted designer said: “The collection mainly consists of garden landscapes and tyres, screen-printed onto latex and mixed with digitally-printed leather.
“My aim was to produce an unexpected use of latex – not expressly sexy but with sharp and feminine silhouettes and prints. In order to achieve this femininity, I used latex alongside a softer garden landscape print, to smooth the graphical aspect of the tyre.”
We’re sure this award has put her on the road to a successful career!
